Teeth whitening used to be reserved to the dentist’s practice. High costs, limited time, and sometimes even fear of the dentist, used to be a barrier to many. However, there has been increased desire and need for whiter teeth. The solution became home teeth whitening.

For many, home whitening actually means using homemade techniques. Baking soda, salt, walnut bark, orange peel, strawberries – all these are reported to be tried-and-true whitening agents used at home.

Increasingly, people who desire whiter teeth at home are turning to the new batch of whitening toothpastes. Most of the time, these do not really whiten the teeth but remove surface stains, thus giving a brighter appearance. Such pastes usually make use of abrasives to polish the enamel, or use silica and chalk (calcium carbonate) to polish off stains.

These kits contain the same product which is used in dentist’s practices, namely carbamide peroxide, a caustic bleaching agent, in low concentrated formulations. The strength of home kit gels vary between 16 to 33 percent, which is the same level used by professionals. Trays are used, the gel is applied on it and the tray then placed on the teeth, usually to be left on for 30 minutes. In some kits, a light activator is also used. Custom-made trays can be ordered from a lab, but these are rather costly. Thermo-foam moldable trays are more popular, whereby the tray is inserted in hot water to soften it, and a bite impression of the teeth is taken. When it solidifies again, it is used as a customized fit for applying the gel.
