The Different Kinds of Teeth Whitening Systems

One of the most recent trends in the beauty and cosmetic area is teeth whitening. Traditionally reserved to the dentist’s practice, there are more and more options available where the teeth whitening system is concerned.

The main evolution in the past few years has been in the mainstream availability of teeth whitening to each and every one who wants it. Traditional concerns like costs, time, and the need to actually visit a dentist have been significantly reduced. Teeth whitening can now be done in the comfort of one’s home, at one’s convenience, and many times, at sometimes half, or even less, of the cost associated with usual dentist fees.

Distinction should thus be made between the professional teeth whitening system, as done by a dentist, and at home procedures, done by the ones desiring whiter teeth themselves.

Teeth whitening is mainly achieved by applying a bleaching substance to the teeth’s surface. Carbamide peroxide is usually used for this purpose. When the product gets in contact with the teeth, it foams and breaks down, the oxygen released therein allowing stains to be broken down, thus ensuring the bleaching effect. The substance is generally in the form of a gel, and is applied to trays that fit over the teeth to ensure exposure. Effects, sometimes dramatic, are achieved depending on the length of time the product is left to remain in contact with the teeth.

Professionals use a high concentration of carbamide peroxide in the system they use, generally around 30%. Such high concentration is because they can ensure adequate care and attention while handling the procedure. The peroxide is a caustic substance which can harm the soft oral tissues if inappropriately used. In some cases, a laser light, or other light beam, is used to further enhance the bleaching process. The length of the procedure generally varies between sixty to ninety minutes.

The at-home teeth whitening system, usually in kits, uses the same product as the professionals, namely carbamide peroxide. However, the gel contains a lesser concentration. The recommended level is around 10%, but most of the time, at-home products contain at least twice this amount. A moldable tray is used here, for a custom fit of the person’s teeth. The gel is placed in the tray, which is to be applied to the teeth and kept for about 30 minutes.
